Clean Water Initiative in Kibera

Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, yet millions of people in Kenya still struggle to obtain this basic necessity. In Kibera, one of Africa's largest urban slums, the situation has been particularly dire, with residents often relying on contaminated water sources that lead to waterborne diseases.

The Challenge

Before our intervention, residents of Kibera faced numerous challenges:

• Long walks to water points, often taking hours each day
• High costs for clean water from vendors
• Contaminated water sources leading to diseases like cholera and typhoid
• Inadequate storage facilities

Our Approach

Working closely with community leaders and local authorities, we implemented a comprehensive clean water solution that included:

1. Installation of 10 water purification systems at strategic locations
2. Construction of 5 community water kiosks managed by local residents
3. Training of 20 community members as water management technicians
4. Distribution of 500 water storage containers to vulnerable households
5. Implementation of a sustainable pricing model that ensures affordability while covering maintenance costs

Impact

Six months into the project, we've seen remarkable improvements:

• Over 500 families now have reliable access to clean water
• Water collection time reduced from an average of 2 hours to just 15 minutes
• 50% reduction in reported cases of waterborne diseases
• Creation of 15 jobs within the community
• Increased school attendance, especially among girls who were previously responsible for water collection

Looking Forward

This is just the beginning. We're now working on phase two of the project, which will expand coverage to neighboring areas and implement rainwater harvesting systems for schools and community centers.
